Default Windows 98 Computer

I recently purchased a used Windows 98 computer. I'm told it has self-replicating spyware, which SpyBot removes, but comes back. I'm also told that the only solution is to reformat the hard disk, and reload. But the computer didn't come with a Windows 98 CD. Where can I get one?

Thanks.

Default Restore Windows 98

William:

I assume that the software has to match the hardware. I was happy with 95, but when that machine died, I went to 98. I like these old systems because the new ones won't run my favorite software.

I don't know what comp specs are.

Thanks.

If you don't mind taking a bit of a risk, you could try getting a copy of Windows 98 from somewhere like eBay - A quick search revealed a fair few original CD's knocking around for only a few quid.

I've not come across much that SpyBot can't permenantly remove, but you'd probably save yourself a lot of hassle in the long run by getting hold of a cheap copy of Windows 98, reformatting and starting from scratch.

I'm not a particular fan of Windows 98 but if it does what you want and ain't broke, then why fix it I guess.

Thanks, but when I looked at EBay, I found many examples of multi-system boot disks, restore disks, etc. What I need is a 98 CD to install the system on a formatted drive. Not 98 SE, or anything later, since my software won't run on them. So I was confused by the multiple offers. If I could find just one, I'd be in business. It must be out there.

There are a few - Such as these for instance:

eBay.co.uk: MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98 WITH PRODUCT KEY (item 150134599317 end time 25-Jun-07 19:03:19 BST)

or

eBay.co.uk: WINDOWS 98 CD WITH CERT OF AUTHENTICTY AND CODE (item 280127991989 end time 28-Jun-07 22:28:31 BST)

You'd have to check the listing carefully or ask the seller but as far as I'm aware that's not 98 SE.

If that's no good to you, try the search string "Windows 98 -boot" as that will remove most of the useless boot discs that you came across.

Okay. I found a site with exactly what I need. It's more than a few bob, but worth the price. I just had to look more deeply.

Thanks.
