Default Vista- some Desktop icons have "boxes" of black that are not part of the icon

I have a new Dell laptop with Vista 32.
I have a couple icons that have part of the icon missing...it is covered with a black square...almost like that part of the screen is not working and simply shows black pixels. I move the icon around and the black part remains with the icon. When I change icons, same thing.
I deleted the icons and "all is well"...but then create a shortcut (of whatever program) and when I put that icon back on desktop, it shows that black box again.
Help! :-)

Thanx in advance.

Try this and see if it helps:

navigate to control panel and display properties icon
select 'appearance'
select 'advanced'
select 'icon'
change the size from 32 to 31 and then apply or OK your way out

There has been this issue since before vista was longhorn. No one has the cause chased down as of yet but it seems to be because of the size configuration!
Hope that helps!

Display Properties
Appearance
Advanced
Choose 'Icon'
Change the size to '31'

Default ...AND, I forgot to mention....

Thanx, lurkswithin...

no go.
I forgot to mention I tried to change the ICON size 9as you suggested) and they don't change! the size, I mean. I went from 16 to 60 with a couple stops in between, and they remain the same size.

anything?

TIA

Ok that didn't work out for you! By any chance did you use a program to remove the arrows on your icons or to customize them before this happened?

Yes...but the odd thing is I used that program last week. and it is this week that the mysterious black boxes (which now look like min-icons that XP has for a systems folder) appear.
Shall I remove that program?

I would and you might do a system clean with something like Ccleaner as it has a decent registry cleaner that will remove some remnants that might be left over. remove the program and then clean the registry and then reboot and see if they come back correctly.

CCleaner - Home

If it still doesn't come up properly use the system restore and restore back to before you installed that program. From what i have been seeing. these programs are interfering with the built in overlay on the icons and causing them to turn black or just disapear.

What program were you using. I've used the following with no issues. They did have the same issue you are having before version 1.3. If you are using this make sure you have the latest version, 2.0.
Frameworkx

Default okay...

I uninstalled the frameworkx and restored all the way back to the very first.

All seems fine except the icons do not seem to be paying attention to the size I set for them...nor the spacing...but now thinking about this...is this different than XP in that XP was for the desktop and Vista might be for the icons within documents (like in Windows Explorere)?

All seems well...we'll see.

I had installed Frameworkx...but do not know what verion...I assume it was the latest.

Oh, and I downloaded CCleaner and it seems to have done a nice job. I was getting blue-screens (at least one per day) and I haven't had one yet.
