U will have to check with the authors website. Usually updates can be downloaded direct from the website, just depends on their policies.

No, they were forced out of business, because of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ther are some other programs out there though.
FYI - If you are in the U.S. while it is not illeagal to make a copy of a dvd it is illeagal to break the copy protection. (required to make a copy of most commercial dvd's)
Do a search for DVD decrypter and DVD shrink. They will do the same job as DVD X copy. But be aware the info stated above may apply.

On DvdShrink and DVD Decryptor. There is a nice useful tool called RipIt4Me, which requires both the above programs. Makes it very easy
