Default dvd no longer recognized by windows xp

Hello,
On my Notebook Insiron 8600, the dvd drive by nec is no longer showing up. I can hear it run but the os does not acknoledge its presence. The driver is there and updated but to no avail. Any Ideas?

Try removing it in Device manager. ( How To Configure Devices By Using Device Manager in Windows XP )
Reboot and let Window re-install it.
That usually fixes it.

Sometimes if you have more than one burning programs installed you will also get this. In this case remove one of them and then follow the steps above.

You did a new clean install...you need to re-install the DVD codecs
