Can someone please help me!!! My monitor stopped working on my computer. I'm running Windows XP Home. There's nothing wrong with the monitor because it works on my other computer. I got the Blue Screen of Death one day and this was the result. My Motherboard has the video card attached to it so I don't think I can change that without getting a whole new Motherboard...Is this correct, or can I just add another video card anyway? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

On my Windows XP Home OS I got the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death". It was my third time getting it that day. I'm assuming it's a virus because I went to an unknown site. The first 2 times I was able to eventually get back to Windows after getting 8 quick beeps which meant (Video Memory Read/Write Error), then my monitor would no longer work. I was afraid to turn off the monitor because it took a while to come back on the 2nd time, but of course, my daughter came along and cut it off. That was 2 weeks ago. Since then the computer doesn't work, or should I say 2 different good monitors don't work on it. It sounds like it boots up, but then I'm not sure because I can't see anything and can't set it to boot to disk either. Any suggestions? Please don't tell me I've crapped my computer

My motherboard has the video adapter built into it, but I think it's gone bad because my monitor just shuts off before there's even a boot. Is there any way that I can just buy another video adapter or card and just pop it in, or might it be something a bit more complicated than that? Any help or suggestions would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks

Be glad to help you out and all that but we need to know what computer you have so that we can look at the specs. Also include a general location and we might be able to link you to a reputable place to get one that would work with your computer.

I think that you are correct from your other post that you have a bad graphics card.

Ok let us slow down here a bit. This is the third post of yours and it should all be on the same thread..

Sorry, Lurkswithin. I'm new to this forum thing and thought I was posting in the wrong place. Didn't even know I was starting a "Thread". Thanks for responding to my many posts. My system was built for me so I'm not sure what to call it. Let's see...It runs on Windows XP Home. The Motherboard is probably quite old (I've never seen a video adapter attached to a motherboard before), although I have gotten some upgrades. It has 2 hard drives totalling about 160g. Well without the information it is hard to if not impossible to help you resolve this issue.

On-board video graphics has been around for quite some time and normally there can be an add-on card installed to replace the failing on-board one. The problem is that there are different formats (versions)....meaning there is three different ways to attach the replacement to the motherboard.. PCI or AGP or pci-E.

they all have have their own special mounting sockets for installing them to the motherboard.

The newest protocol for graphics is the pci-E.
AGP would be the next logical choice but they come in various modes of 1,2,4,or 8 with each progressive mode better than the one before...problem being that they will all fit the same socket for installation purposes but they may not all run on your computer....totally dependent on your motherboard and what BIOS is available or installed.

The other choice of PCI would be the most logical choice but the number of available slots that are on your motherboard determines as to the advisability of installing one
example: say that your motherboard has 3 PCI slots and they are all being used by other cards...you would have to make a decision
as to what could be illiminated...and then is it really worthwhile now...have video but lose the sound card....or have video and sound but lose the ability to connect to the internet...get the picture.

There are applications that are available to determine what hardware is installed or what motherboard brand you have...but without the abillity to see then they are useless.

Without the required information I am going to have to state that you should take the computer to some qualified shop or friend that can determine the needed information and inform you on the feasabillity of what it is that you need to do...I say this because it might be best if you just buy a new motherboard combo with on-board video and sound and LAN add a bit of new ram and have a better computer than just replacing the video card.

Video cards can be found (new) online for about $50 give or take some...
combo motherboard units( motherboard and CPU) with built in video and other things can be got for just a few dollars more than that...Add ram and you have a fully upgradeable computer again for about $100 in parts....

One must be able to determine if the purchases will fit of course and then that would be determined only by physically examining and measuring the case...etc...
