Yes you should be able to match the speed, and preferably the brand of memory currently installed.(including cas) Some boards are more picky than others.
Best would be to buy all new,to prevent possible conflicts, and sell your current RAM.

Also depending on your Operating System and motherboard, you may not be able to acess 4GB of RAM. You can install 4GB but your system will not be able to access it unless you are using a 64 bit OS and the motherboard supports that amount.

Here's a good explanation if you need.
4GB RAM in 32-bit Windows XP and Vista

The newer computers should allow the upgrade to more memory but it is all ways best to check the manufacturer's web site and see what they have to say. You didn't mention that this was a desktop or laptop and that also makes a big difference as to whether or not an upgrade can be performed.

Default RAM upgrade

The computer is a desktop with Windows Home XP s'pack 3 with Alive NF6G-VSTA motherboard. I ran a scan from CRUICAL .COM re the upgrade and it came back that this ram upgrade was compatible with my present sent UP and recommended the 1GB.DDR2-667[PC2-5300] for my computer.

This says that you can have up to 16 gigs of installed memory. but again with what squirrelnmoose told you....that you maybe able to install the upgrade but the operating system might not allow you to use it....

What you have is the 32 bit version of Windows XP home (home does not have a 64 bit version)
32bit Windows XP will only allow 3 gigs (some says 4) but I have never been able to get it to use more than 3 gigs.

Default Ram Upgrade

Thanks fellows for all your helpfull advice, it was much appreciated. I've received my order from CRUICAL .co, only 5 days from USA to AUST thats terrific service. I've installed the 2 sticks with no problems but like you said it won't go pass 3 GBs so until i go up to 64 , but i've notice a slight increase in moving from file to file. Once again thanks fellows.

It should be able to handle it just great! But you must understand that if you install the 64 bit windows then all hardware and software must be designed for the 64 bit system or it will not run right!

There are many fine older programs that people love to hang on to for various reasons....they more than likely will not work.
