Default Memory can not be written - error

Do anyone know what the error message is :
"Memory can not be written". My laptop often tell me this message. At this time, I can not open any other folder or software. I don't have idea about that. Anyone can give me suggestion? or know how to fix it?

The exactly error message:
The instruction at"0x004098a4" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

I use XP system. Any idea about that?

It sounds like a bad memory stick.

First off, download memtest86 from :

Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic

and create a bootable CD-ROM. Boot from the CD and let the test check your memory .... this may take some time to complete, so be patient.

If your PC doesn't boot from the CD, you may need to enter bios and change the boot sequence.
