Browser Internetexplorer Internet Browsers Problem - Bold = Italics + Bold

I'm hoping that the title of this topic is pretty self-explanatory. For some reason this PC, a friend's that I am having to use since I moved in with them, displays all Bold text as Italics when you're using an internet browser (I've tested it both with Internet Explorer and AOL Browser). I've ignored this problem as long as I can out of politeness and not wanting to tamper witht heir PC, but it's really starting to annoy me, and my friend has given me the go ahead to do what I can about it. Within the Windows Start Menu, as well as MS Word, Bold and Italicised text displays as it should. Also, within internet browsers, italicised text displays properly. The problem is just with the Bold text, within an Internet Browser. If you'd like a screenshot then I can give one, but I'll wait to see if it's needed. Thank you to anybody who can help me resolve this issue.

this text should be bold only
this text should be italics only
this text should be both
A screen shot of this screen would be perfect, i'll see what i can find on that for you.

It just hit me, likely this computer is missing a font in the Windows\font folder
check for: Verdana Bold and Verdana Italics Bold if one of these is missing it may be replacing with the italiced version as IE is known to do because it doesn't know what the font is.

If this is the problem a quick fix simply copy the fonts from another XP computer and install them, there should be an option under right click or simply double clicking shold work.

*In swooning I-just-got-rescued-by-Spiderman voice* You're my hero.

Thanks mate. Suddenly, the web looks so much more beautiful. (You have no idea how ugly the average phpBB board or even VBulletin board looks when all of the Bold text, such as Forum Indexes and Category Titles, is displaying as Bold & Italics).

Default Netscape...

Thankfully, there was a relatively easy solution...

If you use Netscape, there is a function, that should be in IE as well, but since I use Netscape or Firefox mostly, I'll refer to the former ...

Under Edit at the top of the tool bar, go down to Preferences...then to Appearance...then to Fonts... check to see which one is in the default field...for each "tier of use." Now, how they work is beyong my ken, but fiddle around with each and see what transpires. Then as advised before, see if there is an acceptable font available... and if not download one and install it.

How to install: Start > Control Panel > Fonts > File > Install New Font...

There are a million of them out there on the internet...

P/S: it's handy to have a Font Viewer on board to be able to just see what they look like before an install...
