trouble Help please: install legal xp over nonauthorized xp

I had a hard drive installed a while ago buy an acquantance. He told me he had to update to xp pro in order for the new hard drive to be recgognized??. Problems have begun and realizing what the problem is, I have purchased (oem) xp pro (full) and not sure what to do. COA didn't work. Think I might need to wipe out the old then put on the new? Will I loose all my stuff? Will the added hard drive still be in tact? How do I best wipe off the old win xp pro? Can any one help?

Thanks
Chuck
