Virus definition files should be downloaded automatically from within your Anti-virus program. All Anti-Virus programs need to update their virus definition files regularly (sometimes daily). This is how they identify a virus during operation. You should check the setting on your anti-Virus program and make sure it is set to update automatically.

Only download definition files from the maker of your Anti-Virus program, preferably using it's built in update feature.

It totally depends on from which website you downloading if it is unsecure than it is unsafe

You have to have installed an Anti Virus Application like Nod 32 or Norton AV (or something similar) to download and use a av definition.

You cannot just download the definition update set to check if you have a virus...

The definition files are designed for specific ani-virus programs. Most AV programs are auto updating so if a popup shows on your computer to download the latest definitions it is probably the one for the AV that you have installed.

If you see a download for a definition update from a download site...you had best be sure of what site you are on...such as http://www.majorgeeks.com...their stuff is safe but you would still need to only download the definition for the AV that is installed on your PC.
