Error External HDD checkdisk problem


i have an external hard drive 80GB , and i make it in two partitions..

my problem is , some folders on the HD when i want to access it i got an error message about curropted directory, i performed the chkdsk utility but when it complete about 98% and says '' could not complete check disk'' .

if anyone could help me , he will be my hero .. and other's hero too.

i am waiting

I would suggest restarting in safe mode with networking (this should give you access to the drive) move to it's drive letter in the command prompt, and type
chkdsk /f
the f is to fix errors automatically. I have had more luck running chkdsk in safe mode and dos modes rather than GUI form, as the running processes can affect it. This may not solve the problem, if not, attempt a defrag to clean up the files and try running chkdsk again.

i tried that too , and the defragmenter doesn't work because when i am attempting to use it , it says run chkdisk before......deadlock
