While performing a system restore a friend accidentally turned of my Dell E-1407 laptop with XP installed and it will not open to my desk top as usual. It opens to a blue page that reads.

Stop: c0000135 {unable To Locate Component}
This application has failed to start because GDI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

None of the f keys seem to be able to repair this issue, any ideas?

There is a strong possibility that your friend has caused you to lose your data that is on your computer. When restoring through system restore and the program is interrupted it sometimes causes a failure that is beyound anything other than a complete reformat and reinstallation of the operating system.

With the missing dll error code you might be able to get it to start back if you can replace the missing dll. The problem is that you need to be into the system in order to do so....This means that you will have to remove the harddrive from your computer and slave it to another computer in order to replace the missing dll. And then even this may not work.

another option is to try to do a sytem repair(repair option 2)in which you have to use an original installation disc to reinstall windows over itself...this normally will not hurt your personal data but since you were performing a system restore your personal data may be locked and unrecoverable.

to do the second repair option:
Boot to the CD and when prompted to hit any key do so. This will then start the set up proccess. follow the prompts....when it asks that if you want to repair an existing operating sytem (repair option 1) or continue with set up...choose to continue with set up. Set up will ask to install on a certain partition or repair the system on the partition...choose this repair option( repair option 2) and just follow the prompts. You may have to reactivate so have your license code available. You will need to re update the complete computer but with SP3 now available it shouldn't be that bad!

Default Same problem here...

Hi. I have the same problem here too. I download SP2 halfway and turn off my laptop. However, I do not have any Windows XP installation CD or bootable CDs. All I have is the recovery CD. Does anyone has any idea how to resolve this problem? Your help will be very much appreciated. Thank You.

Hi. Thanks for replying.

I tried to place the recovery CD in but it doesn't run because the moment I on the laptop, out came the blue screen of death.

I tried the F8 hotkey which came with several options:

" Please select an option:

Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt

Enable Boot logging
Enable VGA mode
Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory services restore mode (windows domain controllers only)
Debugging mode

Start Windows normally
Reboot
Return to OS choices menu"

Which should I choose? I had tried the "safe mode" and the "reboot" but to no avail. The computer still gave a blue screen.

Pls guide me thro' this. I am a computer idoit. Thanks.

boot into set up by toggling the correct key as noted for your computer. Most cases it is the DEL key or F1, F2 or F10 keys. make sure the hardware is listed on the first page!

Hi, when i press the F2 hotkey, it display the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility. When I enter the "Boot" menu, it gave this display:

" - Hard Drive
Toshiba MK6022GAX- (PM)
Removable Devices
CD/DVD-ROM Drive
Network Boot"

After which I could not do anything to make the laptop boot up.

That is the boot order as it is now set to. To change the order read the instructions at the bottom of the page! I think you have to use the page up/down keys to change it

How ever it changes the finale setting should be
CD/DVD rom Drive
Harddrive
Removeable drives
Network Boot

The last three choices doesn't matter what order as it is the first one that counts in this choice.

yes,

then follow the prompts. What you want to do is allow it to install the setup files and when it prompts that it has located a partition with XP all ready installed install or repair...choose to repair the operating system and it should do a restore to the operating system and not destroy your files. You will have to reactivate the operating system and then re-update all the updates.
