I have recently added memory. now my computer crashes speradically. so i removed the memory and it stopped. is there something i need to do when adding memory? i run windows xp sp3

Other than stick it in...no.

The problem lies from the memory itself. It may be a bad piece as they are easily damaged...or you didn't get the right type ....or it is just not compatable with your system or with the other memory that is installed.

Memory should be matched to what other brand is installed. It is not a good idea to just pick a cheap brand of memory as it just causes issues later on. Pick a top of the line name brand memory and not the so called value brands.

Make sure it is a direct match to what other sticks you have installed or use matching sticks...match the speed rating as well.....

i ordered the memory directly from dell, its supposed to be a match.

Swap the memory and reboot using one stick at a time to see if either one acts as it should.....check system properties to see how much memory is loading with each stick and compare. If they are a match they should match...if not make sure which one is bad...if it is indeed the new one then get an RTA from Dell for a replacement!
