Browser Firefox 2 missing optical drives...

Having finally upgraded to Vista ultimate and binned my XP partition all together I was quite happy with Vista as an OS.

However, having done an update of Office 2007 and Dreamscene suddenly both my DVD rewriter and my cd/rw have stopped working.

I can see them in device manager but they are both saying corrupt drivers. I have uninstalled them and rebooted but still I get the error code 39 (drivers are missing or corrupt). When I search the internet for new drivers via Windows Update it tells me that both have the most up to date drivers installed, but both just come up as CD-ROM.

My DVD r/w is AOpen but they dont have Vista drivers on the site and my CD/RW is just a generic Atapi device. Both are ATA.

I have uninstalled the updates which semed to cause the problem but no change. I dont get how they are now not working after been using them for 4 days without problem.

Any ideas ?

Did you use the "update driver" tab

Did you do a system restore to when you first installed Vista?

You might try to uninstall the optical drives by deleting the drivers and then rebooting and seeing if a new driver will be installed that way.

I would even try:
uninstall the drivers, shut down the system and actually remove the optical drives by unpluging the IDE cable and the 4 pin molex power connector.
Then restart the computer and r click 'my computer' > explore > dbl click C drive and then click on chkdisc. Have the system perform a chkdisc at reboot. Besure to check the repair option when prompted....Then run a reg cleaner to locate the unneeded drivers and remove them (google for Ccleaner as it will work fine for this)...reboot the system and After it has done the chkdisc then shut back down and reinstall ONE of the optical drives and see if the driver can be installed correctly. If so, then shut back down and reinstall the second drive and see it is does the same.

Keep us posted!

Click on Start / Run / regedit then browse to this key.

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.

Restart Windows...

Thanks for that Wombat. Id deleted both the reg keys but there was another I needed to delete as well. Basically even though I had deleted the filters one of the keys still said CD-ROM so I deleted that as well and rebooted. All fine now.

There were quite a lot of suggestions on the Knowledge Database but most were for XP and the 2 for Vista were strangly missing. Hahaha thanks again Microsoft (sarcastic face)
