Default Ways to speed up Windows XP?

Are there any ways to increase the speed of PC with Win XP OS? It was not slow while using 98 SE, but XP is slow in all operations.

what are the specs of your computer hardware... also what kind of applicatons have you been installing?
XP is a more advanced OS and needs more memory, etc to run.

My PC is a P4 1.7 GHZ with 256 MB of RAM. I have some programs installed.

You are pushing the minimum memory requirements of a reasonable XP installation. For top performance (and the standard) 512MB to 1024MB (1GB) of RAM is preferred.
