Hi All,

Do any of you think its safe to leave 800x600 behind?
If someone is on 1024, do you think they will be 'that' bothered by some horizontal scrolling?
Anyone know the most recent statistics?
Just curious.

I have been know to just close the browser window at the first sign of a horizontal scroll bar....

I agree, it may be time to forget about 800x600, but yes, there is a but. A webpage should be designed to accomodate all users. The very reason i use gridbag when designing UIs in Java, to allow an adjustable visual interface without changing the effect of the overall display.
I personally run at 1208x1024, and there are few occassions that i get horizontal scrollbars, but in the design of my website i am constantly checking for compatability and viewability on IE and FF as well as on this monitor and my laptop (800x600) as well as resizing issues. Trying to make a website as comfortable for as many users as possible... am i a perfectionist... maybe... except when it comes to spelling, lol!

According to recent browser statistics (Jan 2006) still 20% of the users use 800X600 resolution. That's very large percentage of users to ignore.

I personally think you should use best of both worlds, by designing sites to be resolution independent, i.e. not to specify widths in absolute units (e.g. pixels) and use percentage.

In many cases majority wins, so chances are that many are already switching their site designs to benefit 1024x768. However one thing is for sure, when I use 800x600 monitors at school and so on, getting a horizontal scroll bar makes me mad. The main reason would be that I often have to resort to using the arrow keys, because I'm too lazy to use the mouse pointer.

So like Sami says, 20% is still a lot, and I don't think you should 'not care' about those users.

(oh yeah and BTW William I share the same problems as you in spelling, I wish FireFox could have the squiggly lines like safari...)

There used to be an extension called spellbound, but the new FF 1.5.0.1 seems to be completly incapable of using it. You can use the new google toolbar, it has a spell check feature, but me personaly i'll just wait for the new Firefox to be released which will have a new spellbound builit in standard pleasing me and all those who try to read my (and Risherz) posts, lol

One of my best girl friends designs web pages, and she still has to make them all for the older resolutions. She told me a lot of people still use them so she has to check and make sure they all layout okay for smaller screens.

I wonder when that will go away.
