Default internet connection problems


I AM USING WINDOWS 2000.i can get connected to the internet service provider(isp).But when I browse for websites ,the webbrowser(internet explorer) displays error message.But the internet connection is still active.In the same computer I have also windows 98 operating system.when using windows 98 i can get connected as well as browse the websites,ie no problem in internet browsing with windows 98.I connect to the isp by dialup networking.I don't know what's problem with windows 2000.help me.

To make sure its not a Internet Explorer problem, try pinging www.google.com in command prompt, you can do that by Start -> Run.. -> type cmd ok, In command prompt window type ping www.google.com

You should see something like this:

Ping statistics for 64.233.161.99:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 33ms, Average = 31ms
If it is pinging then the problem may be with you Internet Explorer.

If it displays error messages then there may be problem with your network settings.
