i read an article on how to put windows xp on a dell latitude laptop with no cd drive and floppy drive. In it, the instruction is refering to ide 1 channel 1 and ide 1 channel 2. my question is that are they refering the channel 1 as being the middle 40 pin plug on the ribon and the channel 2 is the end part of the ide cable

can any one please explain to me

I believe you are correct.
(channel 1 being at the end, channel 2 in the middle)

You will usually see this referred to as
ide 0, master and slave
ide 1, master and slave

Although, I don't see how this will apply to a laptop. Unless you are modifying it somehow
