Help saving my pc??

Hey guys!! I dont know where this virus came from in my pc and now it has broken up my pc like anything..It always hangs up, some or the other pop up windows are coming up..I have no choice left but to get it formatted. Now when I'll install it afresh I need a good antivirus software that keeps those viruses away.. Which antivirus you all think i should go for? I have thought of buying this Norton Internet Security 2008. I am getting it for £25 @ EcostSoftware while at PC World UK Computer Superstore - Buy cheap computers, laptops, desktop PCs, printers, LCD TVs, sat nav, digital cameras and more.. it is for £40. Can somebody tell why is there such a big difference in price? Any suggestions would really be appreciated..Thanks in advance..

The diference pricing is probably different versions (older/newer, OEM/retail) or subscription lentghs.

There are several good free anti-virus programs.
Here's a link to several.

You can also do a search here for free anti-virus, there are several topics relating to this.

Forget the Norton AV crap.

I use and recommend Eset's Nod32 AV it's available in 32 and 64 bit versions. A far smaller footprints (no bloat) as well...

Trend Micro Systems

Without sounding too pompous...may I suggest Trend' PC-cillin, or as it is now called Trend Internet Security, from Trend Micro Systems.

Like the previous writer noted...I too have used a certain prog...Trend...since W95 came on the market, save for one tedious episode with Norton... I agree with Wombat, on this point only, that Norton products are resource magnets and tough as nails to get off your system without a lot of grunt time put in...although they do have the NRT to offer up, for download.

If you do not want the whole program, at least download and install their sysclean.com program, which runs in any mode...and it's free!!! I don't think that there is any other software "out there" that would work in the same manner, at least I have not tripped over it yet.
