Default Erroe 1406 when trying to install QuickBooks 2008 (Canadian)

Hi Folks,

I hope someone can help me with this. I am trying to install QuickBooks 2008 into my computer. I am running Windows XP Home.

The installation is going fine until the installer hits "Registering Extension Services" Then, I get a pop up window stating;

Error 1406 - Could not write value '''' to key "\desfile\shell\open\command".

I have checked with Intuit and they tell me that it's a problem with the windows installer. They sent me a Microsoft bulletin but it does not work with XP. I have checked my operating system to make sure that all hotfixes are working and even reinstalled the installer. Still nothing.

I am getting desperate on this as I really need the software working to get a year end done for a client.

I'd really appreciate any help I can get on this as Intuit has been no help at all.

Thanks folks.

Don

Not much info at Quickbooks site here:

Error 1406: "Could not write value '[2]' to key '[3]'"

Here's the link for the Windows Installer 3.1 for Win XP:

Download details: Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable

That's the best I can come up with mate...

Default Thanks

Hey Wombat,

Thanks so much. I actually tried to reinstall the installer but for some reason, it didn't work. This time it did and I finally got the program installed. QuickBooks support wasn't much help. They didn't seem to be aware of the bulletin that you sent me.

However, all's well that ends well. Thanks again so very much!

Cheers,

Don

Default Error 1406 Quickbooks 2008 on XP Home SP3

I am trying to install Quickbooks 2008 and got Error 1406 so I went to Microsoft and downloaded/installed/rebooted Windows Installer 4.5 which is for XP SP3. I am watching and waiting to see if I will get this error again as it is installing right now. So far it seems to have worked. It worked.
