Default cpu usage jumping to 100%

I have a gateway computer with windows xp. My cpu usage keeps rising high at random times and when i try to open my microsoft word 2000 now, my cpu usage jumps to 100% and my computer wont do anything until i close word. I have tryed antivirus and that has not helped. It is really slowing down my computer!

Sometimes an update will fix this. Have you updated your Office software?
