computer startup

I have a laptop Averatec 5400 running XP. On startup it stops loading
after the maufacturer's splash screen. It will continue loading windows
only if I press Enter. Have tried to reflash Bios, however it gives me a message
that the present bios is the same date, therefore it will not continue.
