Default Compaq Problem

Someone gave me a Compact Presario with windows xp. It's about a year old. I reformatted the hd and got the hd up on another computer. I reinstalled the hd in the compact. When I turn the compact on the power supply and fans come on. It clicks and goes off.
I looked at the mother board and don't see any signs of damage.
I checked and it was doing the same thing before the person gave it to me. Any Ideas?

sounds like the power supply to me.. look at the watts on both computers.

one is putting out more than the other.

it could be many things, but something to try first, before investing in hardware is the installation.
Did you install the OS on the current system or while it was in the other computer? An OS will not transfer systems as there are hardware/device settings saved.

The sounds are similar to ones i had when i built my first computer. Fans spin so the power supply is fine, if it beeps (assuming it can beep) then the motherboard is probably ok, when it stops the step after that it's doing a RAM and processor check, and one of them may be failing.
