Laptop blue screen of death or a c++ runtime error

i have a dell latitude that im trying to fix for a friend..it has xp on it but the sticker on the bottom says 98 se...i called dell and they say it actually came with windows 95..once i turn on the computer i can go to any options..like boot with f12 or f2 or try safe mode with f8..i can get the xp to come up and load but right after that a c++ runtime error message pops up it says program:\??\c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe ...i can read it all but at the bottom it say tat this program as requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. somtimes i get a fatal system error..blue screen..i dont have a 98 cd...if anyone could help me in any way it would be appreciated...thank you

What happened to your "friends" Win XP disk, why can't you use that? Someone must have used it before if it had XP on it...

Your neighbours XP cd is not of any use to you., as you will doing a illegal install with it.

The MS EULA states this:

Quote:
1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Microsoft grants you the following rights provided that you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA:

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not be used by more than one processor at any one time on any single Workstation Computer.

Get your friend to purchase a legal operating system to install, instead of pirated copies.

If it is an actuall xp installation disc from dell....why can you not boot with it and go into the repair console and repair it! Every Dell XP disc I have ever seen are stamped copies of the MS installation disc with Dell logo information on it!

OK so you have to have a Win 98 disk for this computer, that Dell said should have Win 95 on it. Somehow you have dicked around with a Win XP install on it, hence the blue screen and error messages. Still sounds sus to me.

Go and purchase a Win 98 cd...
