Is windows xp default firewall good enough?

I would like to know that windows xp default firewall is any good or do I need to buy other firewall to protect my pc, presently I have mcafee antivirus, they are recommending me to buy mcafee personal firewall.

I personally don't like windows default firewall, there are couple of free firewalls which are very good, one of them is ZoneAlarm free edition you can give it a try.

Windows Firewall

When I try to turn on my Windows Firewall I get the message "Windows Firewall is not running because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing service?" When I say yes I get a message "Windows cannot start Windows Firewall/Internet Sharing service"
That's it. No options. No referral to how to start it?
Does anyone have a clue? Thanks for your time and attention.

If I were you I wouldn't use the XP firewall at all, as it is quite resource heavy and blocks alot of genuine site connections. Get a copy of Sygate Personal Firewall or a free one from Download.com

Sami and Firefox are Right.....

You should get ZoneAlarm Free Firewall or Sygate, either one is a good choice, also using Windows XP Built in Firewall is not that great, plus it only blocks inbound, while the others can block both directions ( In and Out ). But like Antivirus Software, Use only One Active Firewall at a time. Good Luck. Devildog

Disable Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2

To Disable Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended), and then click OK.

To start off click start=====>run in the box type services.msc scroll
down to where it displays "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS)" when highlighted right click and select "properties"
in the dropdown menu where it says "startup type" left click and
select "disabled" click ok and while still in the services window and
having the firewall highlighted click in blue letters Stop; Note: You
may get a error do not worry this is completely normal.

Now feel free
to exit the services window (your finally done with that) now the last
step. Click Start====>Run and in the box type cmd a black window
should pop up. Now simply type sc delete Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) Note: you may get an error again, don't fear
this is also normal.

Disable?

Thanks Sami,
I know how to disable it but believe me it's not gone.
I want to get rid of the Crap! I'm also running Norton and I believe the two are conflicting, maybe even conspiring LOL.
This computer I'm running is a babe! but I'm thinking of buying another because of this silly problem.

Certainly learning a lot from your site!
Keep up the good work:icon_wink:

If I were you, I would uninstall norton firewall, disable windows firewall
Check every thing is working fine, and then install free version of ZoneAlarm firewall.

Group Policy on Firewalls....

I wanted to disable my Windows XP Firewall, but it says that some items are controlled by group policy for my security. I never asked for this group policy.. how can one disable a firewall when it is greyed out. I have administrator privileges on the account that I am using.
