Why do people create a virus?

I was just wondering why people think other people creating a virus?
Does it give them a buzz? are they bad people? or are they just trying to help us and show us where the risks lie on our sites?

What are your thoughts?

why do people make viruses? because they can mostly... Its a sad answer, but true in most cases. The ones who go forth with massive attacks against the public or MS, etc, have an issue of their own, and i suppose vengance is a good reason.
It isn't always for a negative purpose that which viruses are created, it is simply a programmers goal to beat a program, or make it do something it wasn't intended to do.
H4ck1ing/(r4ck1ing is the same, it's a test of a programs strength, and unfortunatly the program will always lose. There is always a way to beat the code as someone wrote it, and it uses finite objects, and it will always be it's weakness.
I read a report one time that said less than 0.1% of viruses created are ever used, less than half of those released are ever widespread. It makes you realize just how many viruses there could be....

I agree with William. Most of them doing it because they can. Certainly a small percentage is done for specific malicious intent, but mostly it is people who do it for the challenge, and the thrill. Disrupting other people's lives anonymously does have a bit of a morbid thrill to it, I suspect, and they get a kick out of causing the havoc for sure.

Though people create virus for the challenge and not with any intention of harm, still if the virus programs doesnt have a specific control, they could lead to several disasters.....hence, creating and spreading virus cannot be encouraged in any regard.

One of my friends always say that virus are created by anti-virus company, so that they can make money. Plus, since they created the virus, they can solve them easier.

I don't know how to reply to him afterward...

It would be anti-productive for such companies to produce viruses as they would only give decent/advanced and better programmers ideas as to new holes in an OS. Thus snowballing themselves with new viruses to deal with.
I have been known to write the odd piece of malicious code, but i would never use it on anyone but myself. I do it to prove i'm a reasonable programmer and that i understand what an OS is doing in certain instances.
It is a quesiton of morality when a programmer or hacker releases code for the use of destruction and corruption, sadly there are more destructive programmers than non-destructive in the virus industry.... BUT luckily there are companies which devote their time to fighting these nasty bits of code, undoing damage is much harder than causing it, and to those companies (though for the most part they charge a crap load for their products) i salute them :)

Well, with things like adware/malware, money is a factor.

Thumperfive 05-13-2006 09:53 PM

conspiracies are nice because they make you believe that there's NOT bad guys out there who do stuff like this just to watch other people suffer.

noscire 12-31-2006 03:06 AM

...

didnt you thought that some viruses may be created by the programmers of some antivirus programs??? for them to use their products

langhiyaka 01-02-2007 09:53 PM

Why do people create a virus?

people create a viruses because they just want to show to other user that they have the capability to become the most powerful and superior in cyberspace....
