Favorite Spyware stopper?

I swore by adaware for a long time, and still use it ocassionally. However it seems to not be as robust and all-encompassing as it used to be. I eventually got turned on to Hijack This! and that has been very useful in the last year. It is not very user friendly, but it is able to prevent a lot of different issues because it really works on a core level with the basic parameters of the operating system.

My question is what other good virus/spyware scanners programs are you currently using to protect your systems? My interest in the subject waxes and wanes. Tends to pick up when I end up infected, and fortunately I have not had an issue for the last year plus. Can probably give a lot of that credit to adwatch, which is an adaware program that runs in the background and prevents registry changes. I think that has helped me out a lot.

I have been using norton for a few years now, and I am pretty satisfied. I also have the free windows anti spyware which picks up a few things. Using Firefox also keeps me pretty secure. My computer is very clean and I havent had any spyware problems in a while.

I used to use Norton a long time ago. Unfortunately my opinion on Norton is fairly low at this point. I find Norton to be fairly bloated, and to be a huge resource hog. I tried out some other norton products about 18 months ago and ended up chucking them all in favor of other products because in every case they were just sucking up memory and cpu. That is kind of a pet peeve of mine. Background applications really have to use a minimum amount of cpu and memory, or I simply can not tolerate running them.

Probably comes from my game playing. Whenever I am trying to tweak my machine for maximum performance, anything that has to be turned off because it slows me down is a hinderance. Norton always seems to fall under that category for me.

No offense, of course!

I just use Microsoft's spyware detector or whatever its called. Works fine for me although it hasn't detected any spyware yet which I guess is a good thing :)

I use the following:

Norton - AntiVirus and a Spyware Blocker
Spyware Doctor - Spyware Remover
Acronis Privacy Expert Suite
Microsoft AntiSpyware - Spyware Detector
Spyware Blaster - Spyware Deleter (blaster)
Spybot - Search & Destroy

I would recomend you ALL getting the ones in bold.
You can find most of them on www.majorgeeks.com and they are FREE (ones in bold).

I have so many because I go to A LOT of sites on the net. I would say a few hundred + each day searching for stuff.

adware seems to be useless after a while..norton seems to be rescuring me all the time.

Bongo if you like norton then you will LOVE Spybot - Search & Destroy.

You can make it so it auto runs and when you get back you can delete any that you find or you can keep them and make it so it doesn't find that again so you don't have to see that one that you want to keep again.

It has a great UI (User Interface) and is really easy to navigate around and manipulate how it works.

Again I would recormend you ALL to get the following programs...

Spyware Blaster - Spyware Deleter (blaster)
Spybot - Search & Destroy

You can find them both on www.majorgeeks.com

I have adaware, and it does a decent job,but i've never been hit with anything extremly annoying or massive amounts of spyware/Adware. I am careful about what i install, and dissasemble/hex edit check most of the installers i'm not sure about.
When iMesh was actually useful and free, i used to hex it to remove the adds, the same as i do (not with a hex eidter mind you) with msn.

I believe in Spybot S&D. I have been using this product for over five years. It is great and it is awesome for getting rid of the junk. I recommend it for everyone. It is easy to use and updates fast.
