AVG sometimes causes inability to launch any applications
Operating System: Windows XP Home

I have AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware Free Editions. I don't have any other anti-virus software installed. And in my start-up I have Java and Logitech QuickCam webcam.

On start-up most of the time AVG icon appears in the tray in the lower right corner and everything is fine.

But sometimes AVG icon does not appear in the tray in the lower right corner even if you wait a long time. And every time this happens I can't launch any applications - when I double-click on any desktop icon (including AVG) the cursor turns into hourglass for 30 sec or so and nothing happens.

Then I go into Task Manager and check the cpu and memory usage - everything is fine, then I go into applications - nothing shows - then into processes - aha, several avg processes are running - try to kill them - they are not dying - no effect whatsoever.

The Restart command is also not working : either from Task Manager or from the menu Start-> Shutdown-> Restart - just nothing happens. So I have to press the reset button to restart the computer. Then scandisc comes up, it does not find anything, then Windows starts and AVG icon appears in the tray and everything is OK.

BUGS in the Atticky
Do a good maintenance check of your system...clean out the cobwebs...
1. degrag
2. get rid of redundancies
3. clean and defrag the registry
5. update your drivers
6. run CRAPCLEANER.exe
7. run HiJackThis.exe and delete obvious stuff that is not needed...and anything that looks research first though if in doubt
8. run a complete system malware scan
9. update malware files
10. run WinPatrol.exe and shut down some of the startup progs that are not really needed to be started up until they are to be used
11. use only one firewall, either AVG of Windows' [recommended]
12. have a cup of coffee on me...

You will find that this will happen from time to time, it is the nature of the beast...but if you reduce the stress on Windows at startup...then you reduce the amount of time you are waiting to begin your day's work...

*i advise against manipulation on the registry, even apps built for this make mistakes and can make a bigger mess of things.
updating drivers will not likely correct this issue.

under start>run type "msconfig" and view the startup tab instead of installing another application to view your startup applications
