voip for dial up
 

hello everyone. i have tried using skype but it doesnt work with a slowww connection like mine. i would love to hear suggestions on what to do with this, is there a solution out there?

I have tried Skype and Yahoo voice chat on a dialup and there is really a big difference on the delivery and connection. It's just that most softwares available now for communication purposes were built on the 128 kbps connection benchmark. And I heard soon that the broadcasting companies will be dealing with a big problem (theveniceproject) like what most telecommunication companies experienced with skype.

You can upgrade to either a faster connection as it's the only way to really feel the VIOP advantage.

Indeed - VOIP wasn't really designed to cater for connections much slower than ISDN or even low-end Cable or DSL. It is possible to use some services on slower connections such as yours but the quality is generally poor and you won't find yourself being able to do much else with the line at the same time!

It's unfortunate as some areas are still limited to dialup, but that's just the way it is with technology I'm afraid.

there's a service called voip.com. You can call anywhere in the world for free right now. It's not pc to pc, but phone to phone, and you can use dial up. I think this is just what you're looking for. Check it out, and let me know if it works for you.

hey thanks for replying and suggesting. yeah, i'll try it out. and im going to tell you if voip.com works. hmmm i know VoIP isnt supposed to work on dial up but donedonedone, does voip.com work on dial up?

Keep in mind the old saying...what I am saying is not necessarily what you are hearing ;) there is a chasm between us...

At the computer level, the network between the input and the output has many competing factors to deal with... Try to imagine a network utilizing all the forms of delivery service trying to use the one communications-input-service -VOIP

...it is the same with software delivery over the net...what is leaving my system is going a mile a second, but what is entering your system is going a mile an hour...[or the reverse] the whole system suffers because EVERYONE is not playing the game with the same deck of cards...

Eventually, we will all have to be on one high speed delivery system, in the meantime, go slow on spending a lot for hype, over service...

i see. too bad i cant afford a broadband internet right now. now i understand why there are delays in our voices when im using skype. im about to try what everyone suggested though.

Hey, it's your dime ;) But remember, you may be driving a Ferrari, and the other guy may be driving a skateboard ...what's the point ...you're just wasting your money for another toy.

If you check out voip.com, you will see that you need a broadband service and then you would need to buy or rent one of their modems ...at least that is what it looks like to me ...so where's the savings? Again, your DSL or cable, is an excellent service, but if you are connecting to intermediary services that are not DSL or cable, then you are wasting your money! I am on cable, but when downloading stuff, nothing is ever the same...fast is fast, and slow is slow, no matter if I have cable or not.

A good analogy is when you are driving on the highway, and you see one of those big trucks that are car carriers... Those cars look pretty snazzy and fast, but they can't go any faster then the truck in their presented state ...then if the truck goes onto a ferry to get across a body of water...whoa ...snails pace!!! So, you have to wait until the car gets off the delivery sevices until you can get to access its full potential, then you are curbed by the laws of the land. You cannot just tear up and down the driveway, what's the point of owning the fancy wheels if you can't tear around the neighbourhood. It is really a game of parting you from your coins, not delivering you any faster services.

Nothing in life is free, or faster, or smoother, or...whatever... it is all about perception ;)

nice analogy with the cars and trucks and all! things seem a lot clearer now. they got free calls so might as well try out the QoS. :)

I am intersted in the steps that you will take to get this "free" service.

1. what "service" are you going to use...is there an URL I can go to, to review it...
2. where are you going to get this "service" from...who is the carrier...
3. where does your logic come from that you are not going to have to "pay" for this service at some stage of the the actual usage/service...

I may be missing something...but at some point, the "free" sevice has to be payed for, by someone...businesses just don't operate any other way...

Don't forget, others read these missives on these fora and "we," you and I are guiding them through the jungle of possibilities, so we need to be clear and concice, and instructive...
