How can I connect to my FTP Server externally?

Hello everyone,

I have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and I would like to know if there is a way I can connect to my FTP Server(on the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition) from anywhere? I can connect to it from anywhere on the network but I want to be able to go over to my buddies house(not on the network) and connect to my FTP Server. If I go over to my buddies house right now and try to connect to it, it says site not found or doesn't exist. Can someone please help?

Evan

Windows Server 2003 FTP Connection

Hello Evan, can I ask how you're attempting to connect at your friends house?

Can you give us as many details as possible without posting unecessary personal details?

Regards

Martin

ok, everything works now but the only way I can connect to it is if I type "ftp://my.ip.address" Is there a way to change the name to make it something like "ftp://evan409"?

Changing My I.P. Address to a Domain Name

Yes, you'll need to use the Domain Name Servers to provide you with a domain name that is related to your I.P. address, the same way you would if you just wanted to register any other domain name.

When you have an I.P. address that changes everytime you log on to the internet, the domain name servers make sure that the address uses the same domain name.
Even with as static I.P. address you will still need to register your domain name so that the DNS service can point everybody to your server.

Talk to your Internet Service Provider about registering a domain name for your server.

Or alternatively you can try something like this: No-IP™ Free - Free Dynamic DNS - DDNS
