Hiding File Extensions

I was wondering if there was any way of hiding a file extension when downloading, or if there is a proxy out there that will hide it for me.

Does anyone know wether this is possible? Thankyou very much for your support.

what do you mean hide? I'm assuming your admin/server will not allow you to download .exe or similar files? Or are you trying to hide it from the user?

Hit the nail on the head there. Is there a proxy that would do this? Or can i?

a proxy will let me go to a site but when i try to download the file extensions are blocked no matter what.

i assume file extensions are blocked by the computer technician if they are commonly downloaded ones. Maybe i could use lesser known file extensions, is there any?

When you go to a page to download it will be something like

www.site.com/file.exe

I would like to change it to www.site.com/file.XXX or www.site.com/file

thanks again for your help.

if you change the extension, the file will not be found by your browser or application.
What happens when you try to download these files?
Error message, cannot find page error, etc?
describe the process as best you can with the error message/number and there may be some sort of modification that will allow this.

It probably is a proxy, and you may not be able to modify it, but pending how it's implemented, there may be ways to "trick" it.

Could you really tell me what you are upto here ?
Are you talking about your own website here , and changing how the way the download link looks to user ?

If you want to delete all records of what you accessed , then try CCleaner .

I need to bypass my school firewally thing and download from the school internet.

When i download it comes up with:

Sorry.
The page you requested has been blocked.

Please see your administrator if you do not agree with this policy, or click here to edit the policy if you have permission.

Blocked page diagnostics:

Tilt!!!

You may find that this DOService has nothing to do with the file's extension, it is a matter of the Security settings on the filter of the server's Anti-Malware program...the server being set up on the school's office or the multi-media centre's main office...wherever your client computer runs from...

Certain sites have been predetermined to be sites that "you" are not to be exposed to ...period! So, no adulteration of the "facts" on your part, from a client of the server, point of view, is going to subvert that intent.

BTW...no software exists to completely hide you from the internet...it is all hype... Computers need to be able to both "see" and "hear" each other ...and if they cannot, then they cannot communicate with each other ...period!

Hiding File Extensions

I have the same problem with my schools internet and in the course of many frustrating hours of running into sites that are blocked i have thought that maybe hiding file extensions is the way to go.

As has been said before if anyone has any info on how to get around this your help would be greatly appreciated.

There likely are ways around it, in every situation, but your schools have reasons for placing these blocks in place. Since most music on the internet is less than 100% legal, and apps can do harm to a computer or the entire network, they have opted to disallow all relations to them.
I know when i was in highschool they blocked all of the obvious stuff including any site with the word 'game' in it.

A school is a place of learning, not really meant to be a download monster.

Hiding Extensions

Output from the server is as it is... A *.jpg will be sent as such. When you receive it, you can change the extention to anything you want...say...*.txt. Then when you want to access it, change it back to *.jpg. You can save anything you want as anything you want...but to use it, you have to change it to conform with the computer's internal "translator."

...this is only workable at the user/client level. If you do not have access to the server's filters, then the rest is moot...sorry.

I'd like to reinforce the thought of others, that your school's computers are put in the media centre, for your support, not entertainment. That's what your parents paid for, in their taxes, and that's what everyone expects. You don't open pop cans with your teeth, do you?

True, but there is ways around this. This is a little sneaky, and it could be a lot of work depending on how many files you want to download, but I thought I would post anyway.

First of all, let me say this. What you do with the internet is your choice. You can abuse any good thing, so if you want to do something illegal that is Your problem. I DO NOT agree with downloading music or anything else that you should be buying legally.

Ok, with that said, here is what you do. Sign up for some free webspace that offers Cpanel. You might want to try xhosting.com. Go to CPanel->File Manager. There will be an option to add a file from anywhere on the www. paste the URL of the file you want downloaded into the form and let CPanel copy it. When it is done, locate it in the folder you copied it to, and rename the extension to something like ".html" or ".txt". Right Click the file and click download. After you save it rename it back the original filename. This worked for me when I was trying to use filtered internet to download a large file. I just used CPanel to compress the file before downloading.

Let me know if this helps you.
