Faster Browsing On Your Windows XP computer

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing on Windows XP machines. Its actually created to fix the bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a slow response as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks.

Note that this fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore.

Here's how :

Open up the Registry and go to :
HKEY_L0CAL_MACHINE/Sftware/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace
Under that branch, select the key :
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
and delete it.

This is key that commands Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may try exporting the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.

This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a restart and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.

I appreciate the above advise but am afraid of going into Registry w/o guidance.
In fact I don't know how to get in there in the first place, leave alone getting about there once in.
I know it is difficult to guide someone who is way down in basic knowledge.
Hope someone could find a way around this problem of teaching a fresher to IT.
thanks, ben

I went in to my Registry but could not locate the key: D6277990 etc to delete it.
Please tell method of deletion to be adopted while indicating location.
SysChat seems wonderful.

Manual editing

The registry can be edited manually in Microsoft Windows by running regedit.exe or regedt32.exe in the Windows directory. However, careless registry editing can cause irreversible damage. Thus, performing back-ups of the registry is highly recommended. Many optimization and "hacking" tools are available to modify this portion of the Windows operating system; it is preferable not to use them unless one has a knowledge of registry workings or wishes to learn more about the registry.
an alterateave to direct edidting would be to create
a .reg file

thes can be used to add / remove

the content of the ".reg" file from the Registry

back up first!! or test Virtualy

Speed up my browser

Thank you Codezmith. You are very thoughtful. You covered most of my Qns.
My program is Xp professional 'Tiny'. Many items are removed and there4 may not be able to accept and use all downloads like normal xp windows.
I should have told this earler on, but it escaped my mind completely. I am sorry.
Now the new defragmenter is installed and is waiting.
When i use my defragmenter it says "your pc/machine is running smoothly and needs no defragmentation".
May be my 'slowness' is due to Intrnet heavy traffic. I can't differentiate cos am a layman and also a fresher with little IT knowledge. All guess work.
In registering here I have hit the nugget of knowledge. This is not flattery at all. This is the only site where I had such exemplary quick responses and so friendly too. and brother, I have searched all over for a site like this.
Now, could you senior members please advise, prevail upon the adinistration to remeove those threatening warning sentences wherever a newbie happens to be in. That's the only drawback that needs attention now.
Oh yes, I am a yesterday man alright. But how do you know how many turned away seeing those words.
Thanks all of you, esp Sami, for the kind attention you have given my problems. Codezmith you are a wonderful person,
ben
