What is the recovery console? How do I fix the problem through the recovery console?
Firstly, try pressing F2 instead of DEL to enter the BIOS screen. If that works, you need to set your boot priority so that your PC will attempt to boot from the media you have inserted into the CD-ROM.

If you've managed to boot from the XP CD, it will start to go to the set-up screen. Give it a few minutes to load, and when it's finished you will be given a few options. You will need to press 'R' to repair your windows installation.

Once the recovery console has loaded, log on to your XP installation putting your password in if necessary. Then type FIXMBR and press Enter, then type FIXBOOT and press Enter.

Next, type CHKDSK /r and press Enter, this will check your disk for any errors and attempt to repair them.

If you can't get the CD to boot we'll need to try a floppy disk if you have a floppy drive.

Do you get the option to press F8 during boot time? If you do, what options are you given?

Regards

Martin
