XP Pro reboots

Hi Guys long time user first time asking.
I have a Windows XP Professional Sp3, AMD sempron 1.67 Ghz 1.21 Gb ddr1 Ram, My issue is when I get to the log on screen and I (DON'T LOG ON) and just leave the dialog box there after 30sec the comp just reboots and keeps rebooting until I finally log on, then all is ok untill I forget to log on straight away.
Thank you,
AJ
Regards.

Do you have a custom Logon screen?

Update and scan for virus and spyware.

Hi squirrelnmoose
Thanks for your reply
No it's not a custom logon screen just the standard dialog box where you type a user name and password.
It was updated with Sp3 and all the latest window updates and scanned with SB Search & Destroy, A-Squared, ad-aware, kaspersky internet security 2009, Ccleaner and Defragged with O & O Defrag 2000.
Thanks

Did you make any changes just before this started? Add/remove hardware/software, make any updates, remove/quarantine a virus or spyware?

See if it happens booting in safe mode (F8 before windows screen at startup)
Sounds like something (program or driver) trying to load at the logon screen and failing.
Make sure you have the latest video driver for your system and unplug/disable any un-necessary hardware (external drive, bluetooth etc.)

If none of this helps you can try system restore to a point before this began.

Thanks squirrelnmoose.
Just to let u know it was a clients comp that I have now given back, but I still need to go back and fix this current issue.
When I received the comp I was told that it won't log on and when it did that it was slow, but the strange thing with it was when you went to log on it would ask to activate windows before you could go to the desktop if u refused it would kick you back to the log on screen, if you accepted then it would come up with the blue let activate windows now screen, then it would tell you that it had been activated with the product ID to many times so you would have to ring Microsoft and go through the activation procedure, that was all fine until you did so many restarts etc.. after 24hrs I had to go through all of the above activation procedure again, the client said that they had to do the same thing as well, after I did all of the above scans mention before and all windows updates we now have no more need to activate windows (touch wood) but have this rebooting loop if you don't log on with in about 1min of the log on screen appearing, if you walk away for 5-10mins and come back to find the loop still going so you just wait until it loops back to the log on screen and then log on before you miss it again once you are logged in then all is fine.So you can understand why I couldn't do a system restore because if I did then maybe I would have to activate windows again and now that I have done all the scans and updates I don't wont to do them again either, so my only three options are :1 Fix the current issue :2 Let the client put up with it : 3 Re-install windows XP Pro.
Thanks
AJ

This is a behavior of a non-activated install. It will only let you run for a certain amount of time and only to activate it.
I think you have something hanging it in that state.

Best option would be to format and re-install.
I would try a system restore point. It should not change activation status.
You could also try booting to the XP install disc and run chkdsk /f from the repair console.

Thanks for all your responses squirrelnmoose.
My client now recons that the HHD has cashed and that they had the lets activate windows come up again, I think that they were bull crapping me because my policy is No Fix No Pay, They said that they took it to another shop to repair, they told me three days later and recon this happened 15 min after I gave the tower back to them but yet they couldn't ring me straight away when I was still in the area!!!!!!! say no more I think next time conditions apply (receipt of repair or evidence...)
Anyway Thanks again everyone for there help on this issue.
Case Closed.....
Regards
Andrew

Att Squirrelnmoose
This is just to let you know that my client recons that the comp shop said it was a bad sector doing all that.!!!!!
And that I should have done a test for that first, so does that mean every tin=me I get a computer in for being slow that I should not check for viruses and Trojans first I didn't think it would be that because I at lease did a burn in testing.
Thanks for all your help.

AJ,

Welcome to the world of computer repair...LOL Seems that no matter what business one is involved with there will always be someone that tries to take advantage...

Just to let you know....one of the first things that I do is use event viewer to see what (and where) any issues have been logged. This is a valuable piece of investigation tools when dealing with hard to chase down error reports.

You might not get the exact problem but you will get a start as to where to start looking and then you can go from there...ie, if there are no log reports then I start with memory and then power supply issues as these along with overheating are about the only things that will not show in event viewer!
