XP cannot access system functions

I cannot access conrol panel, my computer or IE.

Prior to this I installed a Gforce FX 5500 graphics card which I have since removed. I have onboard graphics and did not disable it prior to the installation. I have a P4 1.8mhz MS-6533E MB running win XP home.

I did restore the system back to two day prior to the installation.

any suggestions?

Have you tried opening My Documents or something and typing in the location into the address bar of the window.
ie: c:\windows\system32\dllcache\control.exe
or just c:\ for the hard drive

Might work and let you into control panel so you can have a look at your settings.

Can't think of a reason for this other than the GFX install, but if you have restored the system (doesnt always work I know). Try downloading a reg cleaner from the downloads section of this site and clean the reg, might be some left over files from the GeForce.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for your response. I cannot open my documents the system freezes and I have to power down and restart with a power up. I downloaded the reg cleaner, but I cannot open it or anything on my desktop.

when changing harware, there can be many (seemingly unexplainable) issues. Usually it has to do with the simplicity of windows and that it is setup for a specific environment of hardware and changing it without first notifying the system (removing drivers) can have odd and catastrophic effects on the functionality of your system. Another issue is the removal of hardware can damage your memory (RAM), but if only a few dim's on the memory are damaged, then it may take a certain amount of usage until the corrupted memory is used OR specific actions which use the specified (damaged) memory.
