won't start after downloading update from windows.

hi all, hope someone can help me!!
i have windows xp home and after updating from windows, my pc won't get anywhere. I start her up and she does her checks and then says, sorry windows did not start sucsessfully, but lets you chose from, start windows normally and 4 other choices, you press any one of them, and she shuts down and restarts again. this is a repeating cycle, and is doing my head in!!

So what next:
1. Fresh Install original Windows version.
2. Install ur same version but this time don't try to update and also 'Turn off automatic update'.

Bad info again. Microsoft will not give you a virus! If they believe it's a pirated copy, it won't allow you to update and tell you why.

This is a fairly common system of when you get an update that conflicts with something else or corrupts the boot record. If you can choose and boot in safe mode, you can run system restore and choose an earlier restore point.

If it won't boot in safe mode there are a couple of other options.
Boot to your Windows CD and run the recovery console.
  1. Restart your computer with the Windows XP Setup disk in the CDROM drive.
  2. If you are prompted to press a key to start the computer from CDROM, do so quickly. Otherwise it may try to boot from the hard drive.
  3. After a few minutes, you'll see a prompt to press the R key to start the Recovery Console.
  4. When Recovery Console starts, it will prompt you to enter a number corresponding to the Windows XP installation that you need to repair. In most cases, you'll enter "1" (which will be the only choice). If you press ENTER without typing a number, Recovery Console will quit and restart your computer.
  5. Enter your Administrator password. If you don't enter the correct password, you cannot continue.
  6. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type fixmbr and then verify that you want to proceed.
if that doesn't fix it, restart the recovery console and type fixboot
