sata drive

My sata hard drive only runs at udma5. I found it at "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" in the Device Manager. The motherboard has ata100 IDE interface. Why? Thanks

WinXP, 80gb sata

Can I you tell me what motherboard your using? It should be OK, as UDMA5 is ATA100

It's an 865GV-M3 v5 ECS motherboard. As I know sata drive will run at 150 not ata100. It's only my opinion. But why? Thanks

Hello, udma5 is ATA100, your right in saying your SATA is running at 150 (or 300, you may have a jumper on the drive). Would you like a full explanation of why your drive is 150 or 300? Check your Disk drives in the Device Manager, it's probably listed as SCSI.

ATA is 'Advanced Technology Attachment', SATA is a serial connection and is the successor to ATA, they run differently.

Martin

hi,

No SCSI, it's a plain ST380811AS in the Device Manager and jumper is set at 150. I would like to know if this is normal or there is a remedy to run it in its full speed. Thanks

Your drive can't run at 300 as your motherboard doesn't have the right chipset to support this speed, if you want to try it just set the jumper to '300' and if you get a 'drive not detected error' then replace the jumper to the '150' setting and have a look for a SATA host adapter that supports autonegotiation. The highest your drive will go is UDMA 6.
