Resolving Error Messages while Upgrading into Windows Vista

What do you do when you would like to upgrade while installing Windows Vista but you receive an error message saying that you have to rename or remove a certain folder named Windows, Users or ProgramData before you can go on with your upgrade? Then, afterwards, you get a message saying that the upgrade has been disabled. What should you do?

This problem probably occurred because you were trying to upgrade using a Windows XP based computer. Or maybe, there is another folder named Windows in the computer or your current directory for Windows has a different name. Or possibly, a Users folder or a ProgramData folder exists on the same drive as the Windows directory.

Here are a couple of steps to resolve this problem:

1. Try to rename the folder by making a right click on that specific folder, and selecting Rename. Enter the name of the folder followed by an underscore then the word old. The name of the folder should automatically be changed. Then restart the Windows Vista setup from the current version of Windows. You should be able to upgrade now.

2. If renaming the folder didn’t work, try deleting the folder. First, back up the folder using the Back up utility for Windows XP. Then right click on the folder, and then select Delete. Confirm the delete in the pop up window. Then restart the Windows Vista setup again from your current version of Windows.
