Problem Regarding Standby
 

Hey guys, i would like to be able to use standby on my comp, but can't seem to be able to use it because i cannot press the button(not allowed 4 some reason). IS there any way i can use standby on my comp? I use Windows XP SP2. If u need any more details plz feel free to ask, i am more than willing to give it to u, so that my comp will work properly. Thanks guys.

do you mean standby or hibernation?
standby is the operation which will act as if you wanted to switch users, while hibernation acts as a power saver when the comp is inactive.

If standby is your goal and you have a user login, you can do the following:
create a shortcut with this path (this is the disconnect option)
once to the login screen, it should only take 10-15min for your computer to move into standby

Isn't standby an option when you go the shutdown menu from the start menu as well?

Sorry, my mistake i copied the path to the wrong shortcut, i have edited my previous message for the correct path of the new shortcut.
Yes, it is available in the start menu, but many users confuse hibernation (your computer going to sleep) with stand-by a process which goes to the log in screen without logging the user off, and then applying hibernation.

Thanks for the code William, but wat do i do with it? Where do i go and put it? Also after i do that, will i be able to use Standby in my Turn Off Computer button in my Start Menu?

This is just a temporary fix, create a new shortcut with the code as your path. I know i have the solution to your problem around here somewhere, i just don't have time with studying for my exams right now, sorry. Maybe someone else will answer, if not i'll post it in a few days :)

I think this problem is becuase you do not have proper video card drivers. Did you try reinstalling your video card drivers?

Your video drivers are likely an issue, but hopefully that issue is on it's way to being fixed.
You may also wish to check the following:
Go to start\control panel
select the power Options and choose the hibernation tab
If the checkbox is not checked, make it so.
It is not a necessary condition for standby, but it can interfere if other drivers or video problems are interfering.

*Try a defrag as well, if you have sufficient space to do a defrag then it is not a problem, but having low disk space can also effect a computers ability to hibernate.

-Post your results after trying this :) also after the video card issue is solved you may wish to re-try this attempt if the problem is not resolved.

William, there is no hibernation tab there. I defrag using Windows Defragmentor almost every 3 days, and all my drives have at least more than 30% free space.
