Msconfg issues - access denied
 

Hi - I am new to the site so bear with me.

I am trying to remove items from msconfg that are slowing my computer start up down - example is HP update scheduler. After I uncheck and click apply I get the message 'An Access denied error returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes'. I AM an administrator account, so I don't know what I need to do to get these changes to take.

None of the changes take. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks so much.

NO, U Don't have Administrative privileges thats why......
 

May be U R not having Administrative Privileges to do chenges in that. If u wants to chenge ur privileges. IF UR Operating System is XP then Do This

1. Start ur system in safe mode and log in as administrator
2. Start -> Run or Window key+R
3.Type compmgmt.msc ->ok
4.In that left pane expand Local Users and groups and select Users. In that, right side pane select the user->Right Mouse Button select properties select Member of tab-> press add BUTTON -> in select Groups window Advanced..BUTTON in another sub window Select Groups(window name) press Find now BUTTON->select Administrator & click ok -> 0k-> ok To Ggive Privileges For selected user. Then try as like u

Hi - thanks for your response. I have confirmed that I do indeed have Admisintrative Priviledges. I have received another repsonse that indicates that the issue is because of HP software that has been installed. I am researching that.

Autoruns might work
 

OK, if you do have admin privileges, there is one thing that can keep you from changing settings.

the first thing you should try is autoruns.

AutoRuns for Windows v8.73

try and disable anything you need to disable (be careful though :))

If you can disable something, and it "sticks", then it is not a system wide restriction. (the restrictions are only applied to msconfig)

If it is a system wide restriction, then you are most likely infected with smitware. We will have to remove the smitware first and then use registry keys to remove those restrictions.

by the way, there are two things that you should look for in autoruns
(1) printer.exe (usually in system32 folder in windows)
(2) or anything else that is not familiar (usually *.exe)

Run As Administrator is not the same as having Admin privilages
 

I was curious to know how you found msconfig?
If you type it into the "start search" box Vista doesn't find it!

If you type "comm" into the "start search" then you will find the command prompt in the programs list. If you then right click on this now menu option you will see "Run as administrator" - selecting this will then take you to a command prompt (via the inevitable UAC!). You should see the prompt:

C:\Windows\System32>

If you type msconfig then you will get into the utility.

Maybe you did this and I am stating the obvious? But, Maybe you will be able to make your changes to the startup???

I could have made the wrong assumption that you are running Vista???
Actually I just logged on using another computer and see from your public profile that you are using XP Home.
I will leave this response so that others who may be wondering where msconfig is under Vista.

PPS - I just tried running msconfig not as an administrator from the command prompt without the right click. It WAS found - so it must be on the path?
I don't know whether it would allow me to change more however, as there is nothing I want to change! I was just curious that Vista seems to hide the utility unless you know it is there!
