mp3 player driver install

:( i have a problem with an mp3 player install. everytime i hook up my sansa fuze to my computer i get a message MTP DEVICE FAILURE. after many calls to sansa they said it was a problem on microsofts end. microsoft said since i bought an OEM version of Vista it was going to vcost $59.95 to have them fix it. i have to believe it is a microsoft problem because i also bought a sansa clip and had the same problem. the main reason i have an mp3 player is i like to listen to books on tape and of course i need those drivers for that. i wonder if an ipod uses those drivers. but i am getting off track. i tried to download the drivers from microsoft and it seems that it works since i get no error messages, but i still have the same problem. anyone have any ideas, or have had this problem? thank you

Really confusing that statement is. Would you like to clarify how if something works and no more errors that you still have the same problem.

what i mean is the downloading of the mtp driver from microsoft must have been successful since i did not get any error messages, but after i do that i have the same problem with my mp3 player

Just downloading the driver files doesn't mean that they were properly installed or installed at all.

If the files were .exe files then you would need to double click it to start the installation. If they were zipped files then they would have to be unzipped and extracted to a folder that can be easily found.

Uninstall the previous installation of the MP3 palyer and then reinstall it using the newer driver files that you just downloaded. And all ways reboot after installing a new anything!

i tried that and still have the same problem. there really is no install of software you just hook up the mp3 player to a usb port and the mtp files are written to the mp3 player. this is a flash drive type of player, it does not have a hard drive so the files are needed so windows media player recognises the player and then you can sync the files in it to the player if that makes any sense (don't know how else to explain it). thanks for your quick replies

when you plug the player in to a USB port...is it recognized in "my computer" ?

Does the little pop-up balloon show that it has been installed and is ready to work?

there are 3 setting on the player, MSC and MTP and AUTO DETECT. if i set it to MSC and plug it in the computer sees it meaning if i right click on "my computer" it is shown in the drop down window but if i left click "my computer" and go to properties and device manager i see under portable devices- "microsoft WPD filesystem volume driver" with an exclamation point. if i switch to MTP and plug in the player i get the MTP driver failed message and in device manager i get under portable devices-MTP device with an exclamation point. if i set it to auto detect i only get the MTP device with exclamation point. thanks again

Is your PC up to date?
You may have to do a bit of updating by installing the latest service packs since MTP devices are buggy in early versions of XP.

Also issues with WMP11
below from: Readme for Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP

Device not recognized after installing Windows Media Player 11

Some devices that support the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) might not be recognized in Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP.

If you encounter this issue, perform the following procedure.
  1. Uninstall the device in Device Manager by performing the steps in Issues with devices after removing Windows Media Player.
  2. Disconnect the portable device from your computer.
  3. Reconnect the device to your computer.
  4. Start Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP and verify that your device is recognized and displays in the Player.
Phillips Gogear
you can resolve these issues by rolling back to Windows Media Player 10, and then reverting to the Windows Media Player 10 version of the MTP device driver. To do so, perform the steps in Rolling back to a previous version of the Player, and then perform the steps in Issues with devices after removing Windows Media Player.

Sorry I missed the OS in your first post.
Here is a link for troubleshooting MTP problems.

Also did you make sure you plugged the USB cable into a USB port on the back of the computer, not a hub or bus powered port.

i decided to return the player and buy another one when i move on july 1. just so i won'thave to go thru this again i will buy one that has a hard drive, even though i read if you bang them around they break, i am not a kid so i will take care of it. thank you for all your help with this problem

squirrelnmoose 06-12-2008 09:52 PM

Too bad you couldn't get it working. But it may just be easier and relieve the headache to try a different model/player.

A hard drive player will break eventually, it's mechanical and it's a matter of time before it fails. That said a flash memory based player has a limited number of read/write cycles before it fails too.

Before you make a decision on which player go to a site like amazon.com or a specialized mp3 player review site and read the reviews of players and pay attention to which ones seem to play better with Vista.

Also some encouragement. I'm running Vista and have plugged in many storage and media players and have not had any issues, other than Windows Media Player wants to sync with everything I plug in. Kind of the opposite of your situation.
