missing Operating system

Hi All

I need to reinstall XP home edition on my other laptop, it has no Floppy or CD drives, however with a lot of research I have been able to make a USB boot disk, and by pressing F8 got to the screen where it has a menu ie: Start WIndows normally...safe mode etc...Hit Enter ...Comes up with Select operating system to start underneath has MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION but when you hit enter it comes up with missisng or corrupt Hal.dll which gives me to believe that there is no OS system there any way...does anyone know where to go from here...and also can you copy Windows XP installation disk to a flash drive

Thanks in advance
Jilles

You could try the fix from Kelly's Korner.

For the life of me I cannot understand why people continue to use a laptop computer without a cdrom drive....

Thanks for the reply Wombat..will let the forum know if I get any further, as for why people continue to use a laptop without a CD drive, when it was a gift what are you supposed to say "no thanks it hasn't got a cd drive" and I am really trying to fix it up to give to my grand-daughter for emails and web surfing etc.

Setting up a flash drive to install an operating system such as XP on is problematic to begin with...But will only work if the system BIOS will allow booting from an external drive...Getting the start window is not the same as booting from an external source....
