I have a dell desktop that runs windows 2000. I mostly do web development on it. Well last sunday, the keyboard and mouse frooze up so I powered it off and restarted the computer. Now I get a blue window with this message.
"000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". I tried to reboot in the safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last good configuration but it still gives me that message. Has anyone ever received this error? My emmergency rescue disk did not work. Is my hard drive a goner?

Hello Asebastian, there is a big possibility that you have either a boot sector virus, or a corrupt registry containing the driver for your hard drive to communicate properly ( which could be a result of the virus).

If your PC is on a network I would strongly suggest disconnecting it from the network until the problem has been resolved.

I don't think that your hard drive has been completely lost, the first thing we need to look at it is a resue attempt of your data before looking at the prospect of having to format your drive with fdisk.

I'm going to have a look around and see what I can find to see if we can access your hard drive and get it to boot up again.

I feel optimistic. How will I know if it is a boot sector virus? I guess my norton antivirus did not catch that. Hmm.

From what I've found so far, and if it is a boot sector virus, it may have come from something like a floppy that was in you PC when you next booted up.

If you had a disk in which contained the virus, norton may not have detected it and of course now you can't get access to your drive so right now Norton isn't much help.

If you have your Windows 200 installation disks, try using these to boot your system and then enter the recovery console. When your there type either: FIXBOOT or FIXMBR, hopefully this will fix the problem.

I followed your instructions and I did the fixboot from the windows 2000 installation disk. After I rebooted, I get Primary harddisk drive 1 not found.

Did you try FIXMBR?

After you have tried FIXMBR, go into your BIOS ( press F2 during boot time ) and check that you drive is being read and if you can give me a description of the configuration in your bios for your Primary\Secondary IDE.

You know what. I finally gave up and re-format the drive and I reinstalled almost everything but now my PC is back up and running.
