How to transfer files from old computer to new

I got a new computer (windows xp home) now would like to transfer my files from my old computer (windows 98 ) to the new one. I cant burn the files on the old one because i dont have cd burner on the old computer.

I dont have a network i use dialup, what is the easiest and cheapest way to transfer my files.

Thanks in advance.

cheapest would be to remove the harddirve from the old computer and plug it into your new one on the 2nd plug (channel) of your IDE connecting your current computer's hard drive, be sure however to put the pin on your win98 hard drive into slave or cable select so that it will be detected as a storage drive, copy your files, then replace the hard drive into the old computer.. or not.
If you are uncomfortable with the hardware idea, and the computers can be placed reasonably close together, you can purchase a USB network cable, which will come with software to link the two computers via USB as the name suggests. This costs $15-$25

Hey gadis, welcome to Syschat. Now to the problem, if u have a USB drive or a memory stick then that would be a easy and fast way of transfering the files u need to transfer. But if u dont have a USB u can always buy one or borrow one from somebody. It is not that costly. I hope this solves ur problem. Good luck.:)

Hello Gadis,

Looks like your computer might be a bit old to support USB (and USB flash drives)... so the best you can do is follow William's instructions, however, William is a Pro (i.e. he knows what he is doing and he is supposed to do) so you might feel a little uncomfortable in taking the hard drive and putting it in your new computer.

So here's my solution (a little hard, but it should work):
Take the new computers CD burner (if you have one in the new computer, if not I suggest you might want to get one...) and put it in the old computer, then burn all your files. And then put it into your new computer... changing the CD burner is fairly easy and take a look at this thread if you aren't sure how to do it...

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, I do have a usb drive 128mb, it will take forever to transfer my data about 14gb.

I have never opened a computer, leave alone replacing the hard disk or cd burner, iam afraid i will break something.

so the best option i see is usb cable, does all usb cables come with file transfer software.

thanks all for your help, i have another question about winxp i think i need to post it operating system forum.

It's good to know that you have a USB port and a USB flash drive. Oh yeah and I just wanted to add that you can also use your iPod or something like that if you want some extra space.
And yes the USB Networking cables do come with their drivers (well if it was meant for file transfers if will come with the drivers and other applications that are needed).
Have fun using your new computer ;)!

not all usb cables will do this, it must be for usb networking or usb transfer. The cable will look funny, it will likely have a bulge in the middle, this acts as the router or switch for this method. I use one with my desktop and laptop all the time, i don't know what i would do without it.. it's so fast and the install takes only a minute or so, making it easy to connect my laptop to just about any computer :D
