How to create wireless network

I have 1 computer upstairs that needs a wireless network adapter and 1 computer downstairs that is brand new (assuming that it already has one installed) and the modem (cable), wireless router will be downstairs.

So I take the computer downstairs and connect what to what? I will have the modem, and the wireless router.

After I am done setting it up, I just plug in the wireless network adapter upstairs and it will sense it and allow me to browse the world wide web?

Also, do I need to put a password on my router so no one can drive by, and get into my information?

Really sorry,
TERRIBLE at computers,
but good at comprehending.
*I just like to, erm, get stuff right?

This wireless network you are trying to configure would be easier done by following the installation proceedures of the wireless router that you will be using.

While most are simple configured there are some security issues that will need to be checked and verified before you can get it to work properly...The wireless routers all have their own way of set-up.

basically speaking the internet comes in through the modem then throughthe wireless router either connected by LAN or USB....again depending on manufacturer.

Use your built in help files in windows XP and there are complete diagrams under help\networking

I read some diagrams and info.

So am I getting this right...

START Outlet in wall > Modem > Wireless router END

Then both computers will pick up the signal coming from the router.

NOT at all

To properly configure the wireless router it should be hardwired to a computer and not set up wirelessly as is the warning for all that I have seen.
Again...you need to read the installation instructions THAT COMES WITH THE WIRELESS ROUTER....without knowing what brand you are going to use..this is getting no where. Some modems are built in to the routers and would be configured totally different.

You ask a generic question ...you will get generic answers.....you want a specific answer then give up specific information! A very simple concept!!!
