How does GAG Graphical Boot Manager work ? I am trying to use this software but it doesn't seem to work like I expected or maybe I am not using it correctly I have dual boot windows 98 and XP so at the moment I am using the windows xp boot manager Maybe if I understand it better I can figure out how it supposed to work Can I use GAG if I am already using the windows xp manager ? How does GAG know which OS to load ? On the GAG menu when I want to add an OS it just shows the OS type but how does it know where it is located on the disk (partition0-1, disk0-1 etc...)? Right now after I select an OS and I click on it it just takes me to the windows xp menu so this is useless since I can do that without the software |
GAG program is for use to create and run dual boot computers. It is intended to be used prior to a second or more operating system is installed.Since the program hides the MBR to retain the integrity of the operating system it can not be used after the installation of the second operating system. The windows boot manager creates a single master boot record from the installation of the second operating system to boot either operating system. That is why you keep going back to windows XP it is the controling MBR. If you want to use GAG you must 1) have only a single or no operating systems installed. 2) install the program 3) create partitions on the drive with GAG or already have the drive formatted or install a different drive. 4)Reboot and GAG will prompt you as to what you need to do to install the next operating system to the partition or drive you choose. The installation is the same as installing a single operating fresh installation in which all drivers and softwares must be reinstalled to the operating systems. This includes all mobo drivers as well! Each operating system is a stand-a-lone installation. |
"3) create partitions on the drive with GAG" I don't have that option with this free version maybe with the paid version ? Would I be correct in saying that if I install windows 98 it would wipe out the windows xp boot manager from the mbr? Assuming that I can do that could I then reinsatll xp using GAG ? |
when you select add new operating system you will be given the choice to partition the drive or add a new drive. GAG is free there is no paid version! If you use GAG to control the installation then the W98 will not destroy XP boot ini or MBR files. The whole reason for using is that they keep the operating system intact. |
