How Do I getg the Max Speed from my internet?

Hi I am running a Acer Aspire 5315 Laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic, and Our internet connection is Qwest 20mb/s I am on a wireless network. The thing is, I tested the speed periodically and it only runs around half that speed... Is there a setting on my laptop I need to set or what???? I know we have the right router because or Service Provider told us it was...I will give details on it later when I get up later... I would like to speed up my net to what it is supposed to be running, also what would be the settings for windows 7 because my wifes laptop runs around the same speed... I tested my speeds when she was asleep so there would be less drain on the speed...

If I could get help in this matter, I would be greatfull.

Thank YOu Very Much Foe Your Time

How to Improve Speed of a Slow Wireless Network

1.Whatever type of Wi-Fi or router you might have, the positioning in the device comes with an impact on your signal. Place your router in a central location. When possible, stick it near the midst of the property. Keep your router from walls and metal objects. These will obstruct the signal, making it weaker. A weaker signal could lead to slow connections.

2.Most routers come with a preconfigured channel, usually in the heart of the spectrum. Much like about the radio, broadcasting with an empty channel reduces interference and allows a clear signal to have through. The largest source of interference from this is nearby wireless networks. Use a free network stumbling tool or perhaps the configuration tool provided with your wireless network card on your pc to discover nearby network channels. In case a neighbor's network is broadcasting on channel 6, look for a different channel including 1 or 11. Select this by signing in on your router using the supplied instructions.

3 .Wireless interference is another often overlooked problem with wireless network speed. Interference can come not only from other wireless devices but from appliances such as microwaves and televisions, and sometimes electrical outlets. Keep your wireless router away from other computer and electrical equipment. This can make a tremendous difference in wireless speed.

4 .If you are still having trouble due to a weak signal or interference, you may have to upgrade to better hardware. Adding a better antenna to your router or computer can boost the signal reception to acceptable levels. Upgrading to a faster technology router is also an option. However, you will have to ensure your other hardware is compatible.

Most likely cause of "slow" overall speed is the "ambitious" claims of your ISP: "...up to 20Mb/s" meaning more like 10Mb/s normally... your WiFi link is capable of much higher speed but the bottleneck overall is the ISP link.
A Business ISP account should have lower max. speed but low contention as well, so normal speed should be close to max and guaranteed as well.. which is why business ISP accounts cost more...$$$
