Error: "The fillepicker was unexpectedly closed by Windows"

I receive the above error message ("The filepicker was unexpectedly closed by windows") when ever I try to open a file - a image, email attachment, whatever. Also, when using microsoft wordpad, I cannot save files - when I attempt to save the program closes and I lose all typing. I am running windows xp pro with sp2 with a firewall, regular fire scans, etc. Thanks for any help!

This could be due to problems with your file associations.

You can try changing your file associations to Microsoft Windows Default

Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Add or Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults -> select Microsoft Windows

Same problem, filepicker closed unexpected, both Firefox and Thunderbird

I'm also having the "filepicker ended unexpectedly" error. It recently stated to happen in both Firefox and Thunderbird (latest, Windows XP on Athalon-based laptop).

I tried the above fix, but no effect. Is there some other way to determine what is wrong and adjust it? Thanks in advance!

See here:

To remove the bad shortcut, use command window. It cannot be removed within explorer GUI.

Quite late on the reply here, but I just solved this problem for myself after having it a while.

It occured every time I chose "Save Image As..." from within Firefox (many versions/revisions). It only happened with Firefox; browsing the folder with explorer, etc. didn't cause any irregularities. I saw the suggestion about file associations and thought instead to try file names. I renamed a few of my files (less than half a dozen at the front of a folder of 100+) and every thing seems to be working perfectly again.

Hope this works for someone else.

this fix works for XP, probably Vista also!
