Dual OS

Hi!

I'm planning to have both WinXP and Win98SE installed in one pc. Which should I install first or can you provide me the steps on how to do that? I already have WinXP Home installed.

You can also tell me if it's advisable to have both OS in one pc.

Thanks,

pakaplogpo

Hello pakaplogpo, unfortunately you won't be able to dual boot with xp and windows98 as they are not compatible.

To have them both on the same PC you would have to have two separate hard drives and then change the boot priority at boot time to select the OS you want to use

It may be possible, but you may have to take off winXP which would save alot of bother when it comes to partitioning the HD.

If you do this on a clean Hard drive, install Win 98 first on to a partition with about 2-8GB size(it's up to u). Then install XP on a partition that takes up the rest on the space.

I did a similar thing except for with 3 OSes (DOS, Linux and WinXP)

Agreed with WiredUp - Windows XP and Windows 98 will work perfectly well on the same machine as long as they are installed on separate partitions or hard drives.

When dual booting, always install the oldest Operating System first. Newer systems will be able to detect older installations and allow you to add them to the boot menu which will allow you to select which one you want to use at startup. Older versions may not be able to detect newer versions (like in the case of Windows 98 and XP) which is why you really want to install the oldest version(s) first.

It is possible to do things the other way round but it gets much more complicated as you have to set up dual booting yourself and create your own boot.ini amongst other things. In short, do it the way outlined above to save frustration :icon_wink:

Hello, sorry about the earlier post if you are going to do it that way then you might want to consider installing the XP on a FAT32 partition otherwise the Windows98 won't be able to see the partition.
