Corruption of files by Toshiba ext hard drive

I recently purchased a Toshiba external hard drive to store a huge scanning project my wife was undertaking. We used this drive as a backup for her completed work. The Toshiba drive has corrupted many family photo photos we scanned. The files were fine until storing them on the hard drive for backup. Now a picture will have random colors obscuring a large part of or the whole page of a jpg. And many of the PDFs we stored on the Toshiba drive will not open. Acrobat doesn't recognize them, although we have worked with them multiple times in the past. Toshiba unbelievably has no tech support for their hard drives. The lady tried to get rid of me by telling me they don't have the expertise to advise me and there is no one in the company who gives such tech support.
Thx for helping me!!
